The Civil Aviation Authority (Autoridad de Aviación Civil - AAC) is
prescribed in the Constitutional Law on Civil Aviation, issued on 19 October
2001 as Decree No. 582, succeeding the Directorate General of Air Transport
(Dirección General de Transporte Aéreo - DGTA).

Constitutional Law on Civil Aviation
The birth of civil aviation in El
Salvador is credited to a priest, José Domingo de Lara. In 1885, he flew
from the tower of the San Jacinto church to a neighboring park on an
aircraft he had designed, using wood and fabrics. He subsequently improved
the aircraft and completed a 1,600 m-long flight.
Flotilla Aérea
Salvadoreña was organized in 1929. The Law on Civil Aeronautics, enacted in
1955, established the Department of Civil Aviation, which was transformed in
a Directorate General (Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil - DGAC). The
Ilopango airport was modernized at the same time.
The DGAC was
transferred in 1994 from the Ministry of Economy to the newly established
Vice Ministry of Transport and renamed to DGTA.
The institutional mission
of AAC is "to contribute to the economical progress of El Salvador by
fostering the development of civil aviation in compliance with national and
international standards, assuring operational safety, by the means of a
human team committed to the customer's service and continuous improvement".

The flag of AAC is white with
the authority's emblem. For whatever reason, the map of El Salvador is white
on the flag while it is yellow on the self-standing emblem.
