Like all toponyms in the municipality, this commune has two names: São Martinho de Angueira in Portuguese and San Martino de Angueira in Mirandese (the local syncretic Asturian-Leonese dialect complex, co-official language of Portugal and given a standard orthography); each is the translation of the other and both mean Saint Martin of an untranslatable, apparently meaningless toponym. The names in brackets are Mirandese, the local language.

This webpage displays a quartered flag with a central emblem, it can be seen on a 1959 photograph, held by a troupe of folk musicians and merrymakers next to a local landmark. This is not a communal nor a municipal flag, but rather the flag of a cultural, recreational, and touring group.
