Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of Tuxtla Gutiérrez was adopted on 23 December 1996, being adopted through a call for submissions from the Municipal Council. Out of 57 designs submitted, the design by Luis Morán Villatoro was recognized as the winning design, receiving 5000 pesos for his design. He is also the designer of the Yajalón coat of arms, more previously. Its name is derived from Tuchtlán in the Náhuatl language, meaning "place of bunnies", which is why a bunny is depicted on its coat of arms.

The shield depicts a yellow border, reading its original name of "TUCHTLAN" at the top. In its inner area in red, a glyph of a bunny standing over a jaw with three teeth is depicted, in gray coloring and facing the sinister.

Being proposed by the historian Fernando Castañón Gamboa, the Municipal Council under Municipal President Fidel Martínez (1941-1942), the Municipal Council adopted a glyph of a bunny standing over a jaw with three teeth as the municipal symbol in 1941, being depicted in the drawings of the Codex Mendoza; it was also published in the Municipal Gazette. During the period from 1941 to 1996, it was often presented in a shield, but the shape varied; it underwent 6 unofficial modifications.
