Presentation of Saint-Jean-d'Illac

Saint-Jean-d'Illac (9,304 inhabitants in 2021; 12,057 ha) is a commune in the Gironde department, near Bordeaux. While maintaining privileged links to the Bordeaux conurbation, it offers an opening towards the Bassin d'Arcachon and the Atlantic coast and has managed to preserve, with its forest, a valued quality environment.

The house of Illac appeared in the 12th century, and died out at the beginning of the 14th century. The known lords are Arnaud d'Illac, canon of Saint-Seurin, and the Marquise d'Illac probably married to Raymond de Got, and mother of Bertrand who became Pope Clement V. After having been, until the end of the 19th century, a village where shepherds and peasants lived sparingly, Saint-Jean-d'Illac then became a forest commune.
From 1925 the forest became a source of income, particularly with the harvesting of resin. Before the war of 1914 the village had about 800 inhabitants, in 1954 there were only 687, and it was from 1960 (1000 inhabitants) that St Jean d'Illac began its demographic growth.

The graphic element of the logo is shaped like the municipal territory. The colors highlight the location of the town between the Arcachon Basin (blue) and Bordeaux (bordeaux red). The purple elements represent the Landes pinewood. [source: official presentation, 29 May 2021]
