Cenon (26,778 inhabitants in 2021; 552 ha) is a commune in the Gironde department. It is a suburb of the city of Bordeaux, and is adjacent to it on the east side.

In 1865, the town was deprived of a large part of its territory: the district of La Bastide, borough of Cenon, 378 ha, 6,000 inhabitants, was annexed by the city of Bordeaux.

Flag of Cenon

The flag of Cenon, observed in since 2019, is diagonally divided from the lower hoist to the upper fly white over red, with the coat of arms in the upper hoist: photo (2019); photo (2020); photo (2020).

The arms of Cenon are blazoned: Gules a rearing deer Or, above a wavy, couped barry of 12 Argent and Azure issuant from an olifant contourned Or at dexter, and reduced at sinister to the center of the shield, flanked at sinister by a cypress Vert shafted Or, the animal and the tree placed on an isolated mount Vert. The coat of arms evokes the legend of the deer of Cenon, according to which, in 778, a deer would have emerged from the forest to the sound of Roland's horn, then crossed the Garonne, revealing to the troops the ford to cross the river.
