Vázquez de Coronado (55,750 inhabitants in 2002; 222.2 sq. km) is the
northernmost canton in the San José Province. Founded on15 November 1910 by
Decree No. 17, the canton is named for the Spanish conquistador Juan Vásquez de
Coronado y Anaya (1523-1566).
The flag of Vázquez de Coronado was selected in a public contest involving the
canton's schools. The winners are Róger Arias Zúñiga, Cristian Sánchez Cabrera
and Cristian Rodríguez Brenes, from the Dulce Nombre de Coronado school. The
flag is horizontally divided light blue-white-green with five yellow stars
placed horizontally in the white stripe.
Light blue represents the limpid sky. White represents the milk industry. Green
represents the pastures. The five stars represent the five districts forming the
canton (San Isidro, San Rafael, Jesús / Dulce Nombre, Patatillo / San Antonio,
and Casacajal).
