The new municipality of Mettauertal was created on 1 January 2010 by merging the municipalities of Etzgen, Hottwil, Mettau, Oberhofen, and Wil (see below).

Azure a Ferry Or issuant from a Base wavy fimbriated Sable barry wavy Argent and Azure and in Chief a Mullet of Five Argent.

The boat on the flag of Etzgen is a ferry. There is (was?) a ferry on the Rhine river between Etzgen and the German town of Hauenstein. The wavy lines illustrate the Rhine River.
