The municipality of Passos Maia (4,429 inhabitants in 2010; 61,443 ha) is
located on the border with Paraná, 480 km north-west of Florianópolis.
Passos Maia was originally known as Bebedouro (Drinking Fountain), referring to
flagstones used by tropeiros to rest when crossing the area. The town was
subsequently renamed as a tribute to Colonel Manoel Nascimento dos Passos,
appointed in 1924 Regional Delegate for West Santa Catarina, with seat in
Cruzeiro (today, Joaçaba), subsequently elected State and Federal Deputy.
The
municipality of Passos Maia was established on 12 December 1991, separating from
Ponte Serrada.
The Araucarias' National Park, covering a continuous area
of 12,841 ha, was established on 25 October 2015 in the municipalities of Passos
Meia and Ponte Serrada. It includes one of the biggest remaining stands of
Brazilian pines (Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze)) and other
species under threat of extinction, such as xaxim (Dicksonia sellowiana
Hook.) and imbuia / Brazilian walnut (Ocotea porosa (Nees & Martius)
Barroso)), and a rich fauna, as well.
