Description of the flag

The flag of the Town of Bethany Beach, Delaware, is white with the town seal on it. However, the seal on the flag is slightly modified - the outer ring is white, not black and there are some differences in the house: www.bethany-beach.net/sistercity.htm.

At the Cultural and Historic Affairs Committee Meeting Minutes of June 17, 2014, there was some discussion about the adoption of the new flag. Margaret Young said that the Woman's Civic Club used to sell the flag of Bethany Beach (with a white background), but ran out of its supply of town flags a few years prior. Carol Olmstead then mentioned that there was a proposal to change the background to navy blue, and then asked for an unofficial vote from committee members, with 3 being against and 3 in favor. In the town meeting minutes of February 16, 2015, Town Manager Cliff Graviet presented three variations of the Bethany Beach flag. He said that the blue flag would last longer and be closer to the traditional colors of the town. However, it was not until the meeting in March that the vote for the proposed change was held. As seen in the town's meeting minutes of March 20, 2015, the vote on the new flag was held. Gordon made a motion to change the background color of the town flag to blue. It was then unanimously approved.

This flag has seen usage since 2008 until the adoption of the new flag in 2015. However, it is not known when it was first used.

I did find out the original Bethany Beach flag was likely adopted in the '80s. It uses a town seal adopted through a contest which started in August 1984, with submissions sent to the Women's Civic Club and having a $500 cash prize. It was noted the seal would be used on a town flag. The seal in its outer ring read SEAL OF THE TOWN OF BETHANY BEACH, DELAWARE. At its bottom, a rooster is depicted representing its agricultural beginnings especially with regard to poultry. In its center, the Bethany Beach Tabernacle which existed until 1961 is depicted; a historic cultural/religious center of the town. The holly branch underneath it has a feather, representing the Nanticoke Indians previously being here. Above the tabernacle, a ribbon reads FOUNDED 1901. Encircling these elements are waves as a representation of its beach location.
