The municipality of Thaon-les-Vosges (8,547 inhabitants in 2023; 2,837 ha) was established on 1st of January 2016 as the merger of the former municipalities of Thaon-les-Vosges (7,195 inh.; 1,170 ha), Girmont (993 inh.; 1,273 ha) and Oncourt (185 inh.; 394 ha).
Upon its creation, the new municipality was named Capavenir Vosges, recalling the former CAPAVENIR inter-municipal association that had grouped it with five other municipalities from 2005 to 2013. The name Capavenir Vosges was quickly challenged, and the new municipal administration elected in 2020 organized a referendum in November of that year asking two questions: "What name would you like to give the municipality?" and "Do you wish to maintain the merger of the municipalities?" A majority of voters - 3,009 in favor and 731 against - decided to uphold the merger and to name their municipality after the historic central town: Thaon-les-Vosges. A decree ratified this change, which took effect on January 1, 2022.
A new logo was adopted with the new name, and the flag since 2021 is white with this logo : photo, photo.

Thaon-les-Vosges (7,195 inhabitants in 2015, 1,170 ha) evolved from a small rural village into a major industrial town, driven by the textile industry in the late 19th century.
The site was inhabited as early as the Gallo-Roman period, as evidenced by archaeological fragments discovered along the Moselle River; the region was then populated by the Leuci, a Celtic tribe. During the Middle Ages, the village was initially under the authority of the Bishopric of Metz before coming under the protection of the Dukes of Lorraine.
Following the 1871 Treaty of Frankfurt and the annexation of Alsace-Moselle, industrialists from Alsace settled in Thaon. In 1872, Armand Lederlin founded the Blanchisserie et Teinturerie de Thaon (BTT). At its peak in the mid-20th century, the company employed up to 3,000 workers, transforming the town into a model "company town." Management implemented a paternalistic system that shaped the local urban landscape, leading to the construction of ten workers' housing estates (such as "La Corvette"), schools, cooperatives, and iconic landmarks like La Rotonde (a social and cultural center built in 1913). Another major textile factory, linked to the Boussac Group, also established operations there in 1898.
Hit by the decline of the textile industry between the 1960s and 1980s, the BTT closed its doors in 2003, prompting the town to diversify its economic activities.
